SunDance’s new custom coffee valve pouches aim to combine product freshness with flexible, digital printing for low minimum order quantities.
Using a one-way degassing value, coffee valve pouches allow the carbon dioxide released by freshly roasted coffee to escape the pack while also preventing oxygen from entering the pack.
This is expected to help brands maintain the aroma, flavour, and quality of their whole bean and ground coffee products through storage, distribution, and retail display.
Combining coffee valve technology with digital flexible packaging production reportedly allows customers to order quantities in line with actual demand instead of committing to large traditional production runs.
This capability is expected to benefit specialty coffee roasters, emerging brands, seasonal offerings, limited-edition blends, subscription programmes, and new product launches.
Alongside coffee products, the format can be used for specialty food and dry products that require freshness and aroma retention.
Each pouch can be customized with brand graphics, messaging, and product information while maintaining the necessary functionality.
“Coffee brands need packaging that protects product quality while providing flexibility as their business grows,” said SunDance president JohnHenry Ruggieri.
The development comes after SunDance unveiled a flexible packaging solution for the cereal market – intended as an alternative to the traditional bag-in-box format.
Apparently, it uses approximately 30% to 40% less material than conventional stand-up pouches and can be produced using recyclable and post-consumer recycled film structures.
In other news, coffee roastery Kaffee Braun has teamed up with Jokey and circolution to pilot reusable polypropylene buckets for industrial applications. The packs are designed to be stacked, reused in high circulation volumes, and recycled at end-of-life.
StePacPPC has also created a patent-pending zipper pouch for cucumbers. It is designed to combine moisture and atmosphere control, keep products fresh, and improve shelf appeal.
