# UPM the ‘only’ forest and paper company listed in Sustainability Index

[**UPM**](https://www.upm.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **is reportedly the only company from the forest and paper industry to make the** [**Dow Jones Sustainability Index**](https://www.spglobal.com/esg/performance/indices/djsi-index-family?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **(DJSI), which evaluates a company’s sustainability performance through an ESG lens, for 2024/2025.**

After publishing an [updated strategy](https://www.upm.com/about-us/for-media/releases/2024/09/upm-capital-markets-day-2024-from-transformation-to-growth/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) in September 2024, UPM is now listed in the global and European DJSIs. It claims to have centred its business portfolio around raw materials and fossil-free energy to drive its growth in renewable fibres, advanced materials, and decarbonization solutions.

At the same time, it names graphic papers as a generator of ‘strong cash flows’.

Furthermore, UPM’s fourth [green bond](https://www.upm.com/about-us/for-media/releases/2024/08/upm-issues-its-fourth-green-bond/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) has been issued under its Green Finance Framework, reaching a volume of €600 million in 2024\. This has apparently strengthened its position as one of the largest issuers of green corporate bonds in the Nordics, reaching a total volume of €2,350 million.

“We are committed to creating a positive impact for our customers by using sustainable, renewable resources, reducing our environmental footprint and amplifying our positive impact on society,” says Sami Lundgren, vice president, Responsibility. “Sustainability is a core strategic value for UPM.

“These green bonds link our financing to our sustainability goals and support our overall strategy.”

The news comes after UPM’s [Specialty Papers](https://www.upmspecialtypapers.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) arm was [nominated](https://packagingeurope.com/features/sustainability-awards-2024-finalist-interview-upm-lantm%C3%A4nnen-unibake-and-adaras-barrier-paper-replacement-for-plastic-inner-bags/11777.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) for a Sustainability Award alongside [Lantmännen Unibake Finland](https://www.lantmannenunibake.fi/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) and [Adara Pakkaus](https://www.adara.fi/en/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io). Their food-safe cardboard box with a barrier inner paper, designed to replace plastic inner bags in retail and foodservice, came under the Commercialized Climate category.

UPM also attended last year’s [Fachpack](https://www.fachpack.de/en?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) trade show to display a [lineup](https://packagingeurope.com/news/upm-specialty-papers-to-present-recyclable-packaging-paper-solutions-at-fachpack/11854.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) of fibre-based and recyclable packaging papers; these included collaborations with [Michelman](https://www.michelman.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io), [BOBST](https://www.bobst.com/uken/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io), [Henkel](https://www.henkel.co.uk/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io), and [Koenig & Bauer](https://www.koenig-bauer.com/en/index/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io).
