# TotalEnergies and SML target material savings with new downgauging film solutions

[**TotalEnergies**](https://polymers.totalenergies.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **and** [**SML**](https://www.sml.at/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **have partnered to develop two films said to enable ‘substantial’ material savings in stand-up pouch and deep-freeze bag applications through efficient downgauging, due to be unveiled at** [**K 2025**](https://www.k-online.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io)**.**

Designed for re-sealable barrier stand-up pouch applications, the first film combines polyethylene with a thin layer of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) to deliver good oxygen barrier properties. The companies say it combines ‘excellent’ film flatness with downgauging over 30% without compromising performance versus PE/PET structures. Designed for versatility, the 60μm film works with or without lamination, and simplifies recycling when used alone.

The second film, intended for deep-freeze bag applications, is an unlaminated MDO-PE cast film that reportedly reduces thickness in the range of 35%-50% compared to conventional deep-freeze bag structures, avoiding an energy-consuming lamination process.

Made with TotalEnergies’ Lumicene Supertough, both films are apparently fully recyclable and suitable for existing recycling streams. The two films will be exhibited at K 2025 in Düsseldorf from October 8th-15th, at TotalEnergies stand E20, Hall 6 and SML stand C39-42, Hall 17.

Earlier this year, [Win Win Water](https://winwinwater.co.uk/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) launched its [bottled water](https://packagingeurope.com/news/totalenergies-corbion-and-win-win-water-introduce-100-plant-based-biodegradable-bottles/12514.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) featuring ‘100% plant-based’ fully biodegradable bottles made from [TotalEnergies Corbion](https://www.totalenergies-corbion.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io)’s Luminy PLA material, aiming to address the environmental challenges of traditional plastic bottles while providing consumers with high-quality alkaline electrolyte water. Designed for rapid biodegradation, the bottles reportedly break down within 90 days in commercial composting facilities.

In other film packaging news, [Cortec](https://www.cortecvci.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) announced its Eco Works 100 packaging film [last month](https://packagingeurope.com/news/cortec-launches-100-biobased-compostable-packaging-film/13224.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io), certified as industrially compostable by [TÜV Austria](https://en.tuv.at/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) and said to contain 100% [USDA](https://www.usda.gov/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) certified biobased content. Designed as a replacement for petroleum-based products, the bioplastic is said to decompose alongside organic waste at an industrial composting facility at end-of-life without ecotoxicity to the soil.
