# Sour cream cups with 30% recycled polystyrene available at Aldi

**Sour cream cups containing 30% recycled polystyrene, developed by** [**INEOS Styrolution**](https://www.ineos-styrolution.com/index.html?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **and** [**Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller**](https://www.muellergroup.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io)**, are now available from** [**ALDI SÜD**](https://www.aldi-sued.de/de/homepage.html?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **stores across Germany.**

After receiving a [German Packaging Award](https://packagingeurope.com/news/winners-of-the-german-packaging-award-2025-announced/13115.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) under the ‘Sustainability: Recycled Content’ category in July, the cups – first launched at the beginning of the year – are anticipated to drive circular packaging for food-contact, mass-market applications.

They are intended to align with the stricter rules of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, with INEOS Styrolution submitting a formal [EFSA](https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) application for its recycling technology.

It comes after the previous rollout of [yoghurt cups](https://packagingeurope.com/news/polystyrene-mechanically-recycled-into-yoghurt-cups-in-supermarket-first/12307.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) containing mechanically recycled polystyrene, now available at [Lidl](https://www.lidl.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) supermarkets. This utilizes a purification process previously limited to PET bottle recyclates and claims to offer a ‘significantly lower’ environmental footprint than a conventional polystyrene cup.

“INEOS Styrolution is turning the promise of recycled polystyrene into a practical reality,” said Rob Buntinx, president EMEA. “We’re proving that circular solutions can meet both food safety standards and performance demands. We’re calling on the entire value chain to join us in making circularity the new normal.”

In other news, [Huhtamaki](https://www.huhtamaki.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) has developed recyclable, home and industrially compostable [ice cream cups](https://packagingeurope.com/news/huhtamaki-launches-compostable-recyclable-ice-cream-cups/13081.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) made from certified ‘responsibly sourced’ paperboard and a biobased material coating. Apparently, its plastic content totals less than 10%.

[ITC Packaging](https://www.itc-packaging.com/en/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io)’s thermoformed [CombiCup](https://packagingeurope.com/news/itc-packaging-thermoforms-plastic-dairy-cup-with-separable-paper-elements/12589.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) for hot and cold, ready-to-drink and dairy products also features separable, ‘100% recyclable’ plastic and cardboard components. Customers can opt into incorporating recycled paper and adapting the cup for different shapes and capacities.
