# Siegwerk and Henkel announce new oxygen barrier coating for food-contact flexibles

**A partnership between** [**Siegwerk**](https://www.siegwerk.com/en/home.html?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **and** [**Henkel**](https://www.henkel.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **has supposedly produced an oxygen barrier coating that is applicable to mono-material flexible packaging, a solution that aims to contribute to a circular economy for food packaging.**

Claimed to be industrially validated with recognition from APR Critical Guidance, the coating is designed for compatibility with dry food products – retaining the preservation properties of standard packaging and maintaining the products’ expected shelf life – and aims to keep mixed-material packaging out of recycling streams.

The solution has been launched in North America and Europe this month, with other areas of the world set to follow suit throughout 2023.

[Hubergroup Print Solutions](https://www.hubergroup.com/uk/en/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) has produced its own [oxygen barrier coating](https://packagingeurope.com/news/hubergroup-launches-new-oxygen-barrier-coating-for-flexible-packaging/8033.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) to be applied between film laminates made of the same material as the packaging itself, which is thought to make the whole pack easier to recycle.

[TotalEnergies](https://totalenergies.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io), [Windmöller & Hölscher](https://www.wh.group/int/en/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io), and [Mitsubishi Chemical Group](https://www.mitsubishichem-hd.co.jp/english/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) have also announced the successful completion of a proof of concept for their [high barrier stand-up pouch](https://packagingeurope.com/news/recyclable-high-barrier-stand-up-pouch-announced-by-totalenergies-wandh-and-mitsubishi-chemical-group/8993.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) for contact-sensitive food packaging.

[Nova Chemicals](https://www.novachem.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io)’ mono-material [oxygen barrier packaging](https://packagingeurope.com/news/finalist-interview-recyclable-oxygen-barrier-packaging-from-nova-chemicals/8953.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) material made the finals of the Sustainability Awards 2022 under the pre-commercialised ‘Recyclable Packaging’ category.
