# Fresh-fibre fluting added to Holmen’s ‘ultra-lightweight’ cartonboard lineup

[**Holmen**](https://www.holmen.com/en/board-and-paper/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **has added a fresh-fibre fluting to its ‘ultra-lightweight’ cartonboard range, intended to help reduce material consumption and emissions without impacting performance.**

Approved for direct contact with dry, moist, and fatty foods, the Holmen Elevate range is used in shelf-ready retail, fruit and vegetable punnets, e-commerce, and other applications where weight reduction, material use, and cost are important factors.

The addition of Holmen Elevate fresh-fibre fluting has expanded the range to include both liner and fluting options. This is anticipated to unlock a ‘unified approach’ to lightweighting, with grades starting at 72gsm.

Holmen Elevate is manufactured at Braviken Paper Mill in Sweden, with Holmen claiming to source pulpwood and wood chips from its adjacent sawmill. Residual materials are reportedly used for bioenergy and soil improvement.

As such, Holmen believes that Holmen Elevate delivers one of the lowest carbon footprints in the sector.

“Fresh fibre is at the core of how we combine performance with sustainability,” says Mathias Dufeld, Segment Owner Containerboard at Holmen Board and Paper. “By enabling lightweight corrugated solutions, we can help reduce material use and improve cost efficiency while supporting circularity and the efficient use of resources.”

In similar news, [Ravenwood Packaging](https://www.ravenwood.co.uk/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) recently joined forces with [Troya Alimentos](https://troya-alimentos.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) to package fresh produce in [linerless, tray-based packaging](https://packagingeurope.com/news/ravenwood-and-troya-alimentos-launch-mexicos-first-linerless-tray-for-fresh-produce/14078.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io). Described as a ‘first’ for Mexico, the new packaging is set to replace plastic nets and traditional labels.

[Pro Carton](https://www.procarton.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) has also reported that the carton packaging industry has achieved an [8% reduction](https://packagingeurope.com/news/pro-carton-reports-8-reduction-in-carbon-emissions-for-carton-packaging-industry/13973.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) in cradle-to-gate fossil carbon emissions since 2021 – falling from 929 kg CO2 equivalent to 854 kg CO2 equivalent per tonne.
