It is hoped to enable DS Smith to open up new opportunities in the northwest of Iberia and, in turn, improve production capacity and service for all its customers. The building of foundations, construction, and roofing of the new buildings – alongside improvements to current resources and the preparation of facilities to house new machinery by the end of 2023 – began in March. Scheduled to take seven months to complete, it will apparently increase both the surface area and production and storage capacity of the location. DS Smith states that ‘sustainable and environmentally friendly materials’ will be used to develop energy-efficient systems in line with its Now and Nextsustainability strategy, which aspires to reduce current environmental impact and looks towards a transition into a circular economy. Ignacio Montfort, managing director of DS Smith Iberia, explains:“This expansion of our Cartogal plant is a source of pride for all of us at DS Smith, as it will allow us to significantly increase our production capacity to meet the needs of our customers, who are at the centre of our universe. This investment clearly reflects our ongoing commitment to continue to provide the best sustainable packaging solutions while supporting economic growth in the region. This project is a further demonstration of DS Smith’s strong commitment to expansion and growth in the Iberia region, where it already has 26 plants. In Galicia the company has - in addition to Cartogal - two other plants: the DS Smith Galicia factory located in Vilagarcía de Arousa and DS Smith Tecnicartón Vigo, located in the town of Porriño. This project is a further demonstration of DS Smith’s strong commitment to expansion and growth in the Iberia region, where it already has twenty plants. In the case of the DS Smith Cartogal plant, as well as the DS Smith Galicia factory located in Vilagarcía de Arousa and DS Smith Tecnicartón Vigo, which located in the town of Porriño were acquired in 2015 from the Lantero group as part of the multinational’s implementation in the Spanish market.” Earlier this year, [Smurfit Kappa](https://www.smurfitkappa.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) announced that it would invest €27 million into a new [waste management and recovery facility](https://packagingeurope.com/news/smurfit-kappa-invests-in-waste-management-and-recovery-facility-at-spanish-paper-mill/9460.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) at its Nervión paper mill. Its lime kiln and gas treatment system hopes to keep 75,000 tonnes of waste out of landfill.
