# Bunzl UK & Ireland and Huhtamaki provide food boxes with plant-based coating

**In collaboration with plant-based materials company** [**Xampla**](https://xampla.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io)**,** [**Bunzl**](https://www.bunzl.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) **UK & Ireland has announced the addition of** [**Huhtamaki**](https://www.huhtamaki.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io)**’s Morro coated ‘Taste’ hot food boxes to its range of food service packaging.**

The ‘Taste’ boxes are available across Bunzl’s network of operating companies delivering to national restaurant chains, transport hubs, hotels, contract caterers, and stadiums across the UK and Ireland. Crafted in the UK from responsibly sourced papers and available in a range of sizes, Bunzl says the boxes feature an embossed Morro marque to show it has a barrier coating made from plants.

Classified as plastic-free under the [European SUP Directive](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2019/904/oj?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) alongside rigorous in-house evaluations at Xampla, Morro Coating is said to offer ‘excellent’ grease and leak resistance while maintaining recyclability. Xampla’s plant protein technology aims to provide a scalable, drop-in alternative for manufacturers and brands navigating regulatory and environmental pressures, as well as responding to consumer demand.

In April, Huhtamaki partnered with [Lieferando](https://www.lieferando.de/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) to provide partnering restaurants with its corrugated paper [delivery boxes](https://packagingeurope.com/news/huhtamakis-plant-polymer-coated-delivery-boxes-now-available-via-lieferando/12708.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) coated with Xampla’s plant-based polymer. Seeking to deliver ‘plastic-free’ and ‘biodegradable’ packaging solutions for a broader range of dishes, the boxes are said to be suitable for transporting various food types including fatty foods, due to their thermal insulation and ‘high’ stability.

Earlier this year [Avantium](https://avantium.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) and [Amcor](https://www.amcor.com/?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) signed a joint development agreement to explore the use of Avantium’s [plant-based polymer](https://packagingeurope.com/news/avantium-and-amcor-to-explore-plant-based-polymer-use-in-rigid-containers/12486.article?ref=packaging-europe.ghost.io) PEF (branded as Releaf) in rigid containers for products including food, beverage, pharmaceutical, medical, home, and personal care. Releaf is a ‘100% plant-based, high-performance’ polymer said to be recyclable in existing PET (polyethylene terephthalate) recycling streams.
